The Key Contacts Building UK Capabilities OST - The Office of Science and Technology

Through the Office of Science and Technology, we are working to maintain the excellence of SET in the UK and improve public understanding of its contribution: to develop publicly-funded SET to meet the country's future needs, taking account of Technology Foresight and the needs of industry and other users while improving efficiency and value for money; to foster partnership between the science and engineering base, industry and Government to exploit the potential of SET; to maximise the effectiveness of our European Union and international collaboration in meeting UK objectives; and to promote collaboration between Government Departments and ensure that transdepartmental SET issues are handled effectively. Business and the Environment The environment is an important business issue. DTI encourages business to respond to the opportunities offered by the increasing interest of consumers and other stakeholders in environmental performance. DTI works with the Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) to provide guidance on best practice through the Envirowise Programme. The Programme runs a freephone Environmental Helpline (0800 585 794) which can help businesses on most environmental problems. The two Departments also sponsor the environmental technology and services industry. DTI also sponsors the waste management industry. We can provide advice on a range of specific environmental issues which are important to the competitiveness of UK business. (See also Energy for key contacts on new and renewable energy.) It is comprised of three Units: the Competitiveness Unit, the Future Unit and the Enterprise Unit. The work of the Competitiveness Unit includes: developing and pursuing strategies to achieve DTI's aims as a whole (inlcuding a Business Support Strategy); maintaining a network of strategic contacts with business and opinion formers and spreading knowledge and understanding of the UK's competitiveness position; analysing the factors which determine UK competitiveness in comparison with other countries; working with other Government Departments and public agencies to enhance their contributions to competitiveness. The work of the Future Unit includes: developing a better understanding of how industries and markets of the future may develop and affect DTI policies and activities and how we can assist such industries to grow; providing a positive environment for the development of new ideas and a strategic approach which can inform future decision in Dti (e.g. on the impact of the information age and environmental regulation on SMEs); helping promote a strong UK economy for the future taking full advantage of new opportunities arising from advances in science and technology. The work of the Enterprise Unit includes: working with Directorates across the Department of Trade and Industry on a wide range of enterprise issues including the promotion of an enterprise culture and reduced compliance costs. The Enterprise Unit home page can be found here Small Firms DTI supports the growth of small and medium-sized businesses and has initiated a number of measures and programmes to help them. In order to meet business needs more effectively, DTI business support is increasingly channelled through local Business Links. For further information, you should contact your local Business Link, on 0845 7567 765. Each Business Link is a partnership bringing together all key local business support providers (Chambers of Commerce, Training and Enterprise Councils, local authorities and enterprise agencies). DTI regional policies help the English regions to improve their competitiveness. Regional Selective Assistance supports investment projects in Assisted Areas, including major inward investment projects. The European Structural Funds support a variety of projects including economic infrastructure and diversification. Regional policies are delivered primarily through the Government Offices for the English regions, and through the Welsh Office, the Scottish Office and the Northern Ireland Department of Economic Development.
